As well as temples, Chiang Mai is also known for its vibrant cultural festivals. The most famous of these is the Loy Krathong festival, which takes place every November. During this festival, thousands of floating lanterns are launched into the Mae Ping River, creating a spectacular spectacle. The city also hosts the Songkran festival, the traditional Thai New Year celebration, where people throw water at each other to purify themselves and celebrate the start of the New Year.
As well as festivals, Chiang Mai is also famous for its bustling markets. The Chiang Mai Night Market is one of Thailand’s largest and most popular, offering a range of handicrafts, clothing, jewelry and food. Warorot market is also very popular, with a selection of fresh produce, meats, fish, spices and souvenirs.
